Why a home based bakery

I started a home based bakery in 2017. The main reason for starting the bakery was financial set up. I was in state where I needed extra income to cover for the expenses of my family. I discussed with my family and we agreed on a business that can give us at least a R100 per day, it was the main aim / goal of the business. I started with no baking experience, but with passion and motivation to grow.

I was motivated by my sister in law as she was already in the home based bakery business in another town. I gave her a call to ask how she is running her home based bakery business and offered some tips that I will be sharing with you. Starting every small home based business requires motivation, and disciple. Every individual has that thing in them to start a small home based business. You just need to find it and unleash it.

How it all started with the home based bakery business

I started my home based bakery business by buying affordable ingredients. It was a small business indeed. Starting a small business with R250, unbelievable story of a small business

  • 2x 1kg muffin mix for R50
  • 30 eggs for R45
  • 2 litre milk for R15
  • 2 litre Cooking oil for R40
  • Muffin cup papers for R25
  • Electricity/ gas for R50

I already had an oven and the baking tins in my house. If you have them you can start too with that amount. But if you do not have them you can check a small oven in the shops for not more than a R1000.

Out of the ingredients that cost me around R250 I started the home based small business bakery. Baked the muffins following the instructions on the packet and it gave me beautiful 48 muffins. In the morning I went with them to office and sold each for R5 and in total made R240. Then I saved R190 and used R50 to buy another mixture packet and used the remaining other ingredients and day two I made another R240. This scenario of saving R190 was repeated for 5 days. By end of 5 days I had R950. Then I took 250 to buy all ingredients for another week and made a profit of R700 for 5 days.
